“Lives Less Ordinary” Historical Cemeteries Talk with Debbie Suggs
Tuesday, October 25th (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) Potluck begins at 6pm; Presentation at 7pm.
In addition to natural resources and open spaces, SKLT preserves cultural landscapes, including historical cemeteries dating back to the late 17th century. Join Debbie Suggs as she talks about many of the unique individuals interred on Land Trust properties and their impact on South Kingstown, Rhode Island and the nation’s history. Participants will learn how local volunteers have joined forces with the RI Historical Cemeteries Commission and the Daughters of the American Revolution “Service to America” project to restore historical cemeteries throughout South County.

Debbie Suggs holds a bachelor’s degree in American History and a master’s degree in public administration. She works at the University of Rhode Island as the Director of Admission, Special Populations and serves as an instructor for College Unbound teaching courses related to history and culture. She has been active in the RI Department of Education to improve RI history and social studies standards and service on the Rhode Island Historic Cemeteries Commission. As the Narragansett-Cooke-Gaspee Chapter, NSDAR Historic Preservation Chair, she recently published an index of South Kingstown and Narragansett Revolutionary War Veterans and will be working with South County History Center to recognize the burial grounds of RI’s enslaved populations.
