Inner Workings of the Samuel Perry Grist Mill Potluck Lecture

SKLT Barn, 17 Matunuck Beach Road

(6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) Potluck begins at 6pm; Presentation at 6:45pm.

Calling all mechanical enthusiasts and local history buffs!

Rob Lyons, speaking as miller and local historian, will share how SKLT and its volunteers operate the only water powered mill currently operating in Rhode Island!

In continuous operation since it was built in 1703, the Samuel Perry Grist Mill is a working mill where locally grown Rhode Island white cap flint corn is stone ground by waterpower into jonnycake meal.

You’ll learn about the unique history of the mill, how its original construction and grinding processes changed over time, and its eventual transformation from traditional water wheel to the Hercules Water Turbine.

Free, $10 suggested donation per attendee. (Please bring a small appetizer, entree, or dessert to share. Please label it.)

SKLT will be hosting a grinding at the Samuel Perry Grist Mill in February, March, and April, weather permitting. Stay tuned to SKLT e-news and social media for info on when and how to attend.

SKLT will also be hosting a series of intimate interactive instructional sessions to cultivate skilled grist mill volunteers to maintain the mill for future generations! Please indicate in the form below if you would like to be invited to these sessions.
