SKLT takes our obligation to steward the natural, agricultural, and historic landscapes entrusted to our care very seriously. One of the ways in which SKLT protects land is through conservation easements (CEs) that we hold on property that remains in private ownership. If you are the owner of a property with a CE on it, you may have questions about how the CE affects how you can use your land. SKLT’s Stewardship Team works closely with landowners to answer questions about the CEs on their land to ensure that these agreements are followed.

Through our stewardship program, we:

  1. Help landowners understand how the CE affects which activities they are, and are not, allowed to do on their property.
  2. Visit every protected property annually (typically between January and April, before springtime leaves emerge).
  3. Review and approve major activity requests from landowners, such as requests to build structures, cut timber, etc.
  4. Take steps, when necessary, to remedy any violation of a conservation easement.

SKLT’s goal is to be a partner with and provide resources to landowners to avoid misunderstandings and ensure that the conservation easement’s conditions are upheld.
