The Heart of SKLT
Tucked along Matunuck Beach Road in Wakefield, the South Kingstown Land Trust’s field office sits at the center of our work to conserve land and strengthen community. Overlooking the rolling fields of historic Weeden Farm, the SKLT Office, Barn, and Tractor Shed form the Woodcock Campus — a place where conservation, collaboration, and connection take root.
Thanks to the generosity of local benefactors, this space serves as both a working landscape and a gathering place. From board meetings and lectures to our annual auction and public events, the Woodcock Campus is the heart of our organization.
The Barn at Weeden Farm
Affectionately dubbed The Barn, this graceful timber structure welcomes dozens of community groups and partner organizations each year. It’s home to SKLT’s meetings, retreats, lectures, and special events — and a place where ideas to protect South County’s natural lands take shape and grow.
The Barn is available for nonprofit use only and hosts roughly 100 events annually, including workshops, conferences, and planning sessions. Other land trusts are welcome to use the space free of charge.
From Farmstead to Field Office - A Century of Stewardship.
For more than 100 years, a barn stood on this very site, serving the Weeden family as a garage and living quarters for farm staff. In 1999, 97 acres of the surrounding farmland were permanently protected by The Nature Conservancy, using funds from the Champlin Foundations and the Rhode Island Agricultural Land Preservation Commission. Stewardship of the land was transferred to the South Kingstown Land Trust, ensuring its protection in perpetuity.
In 2001, the old barn and its 3.6-acre parcel were donated to SKLT for use as a field office and community hub. With generous community support, a new Barn was built on the same footprint and officially opened in March 2003 at Weeden Farm.
A Hub for Conservation
The Barn’s location places it at the heart of South Kingstown’s conservation corridor — surrounded by the farmlands of Matunuck, the rare species habitats of the Matunuck Hills, and the unique geology of Perryville.
Here, conservationists, educators, and community members come together to share ideas, plan projects, and celebrate progress. In sharing this space with other like-minded organizations, SKLT hopes to inspire continued work to protect the natural lands that define South County.
