South Kingstown Land Trust has completed over 175 land preservation projects since 1983, protecting over 3000 acres throughout South Kingstown. Our protected lands range from partial-acre lots donated by landowners to our largest property, the Browning Woods/Kenney area, encompassing 260 acres and beautiful trails. The map below provides an overview of SKLT’s protected properties. On lands that SKLT owns outright and when resources allow, we create trails to encourage public access and appreciation for the importance of preserving land. However, much of the land we protect remains privately owned, and these lands are protected by conservation easement. SKLT’s protected land is not all open to the public; please respect landowners’ privacy, and visit only our publicized public access trails. Click the expand icon in the map for full screen

Regional Protected Properties

Through the Washington County Land Trust Coalition (WCLTC), South Kingstown Land Trust worked with its neighbors, including Narrow River Land Trust, Westerly Land Trust, Westerly Municipal Land Trust, Land Conservancy of North Kingstown, Charlestown Land Trust, Hopkinton Land Trust, Richmond Rural Preservation Land Trust, and Narragansett Land Conservancy, to strengthen land trust capacity on a regional basis. With funding from the Rhode Island Foundation, the WCLTC group built on the RI Department of Environmental Management’s South County Greenspace report to develop regional priority areas for land protection. (Click here to see that report.)

SKLT administrates a follow-up program, the Landowner Assistance Program, to provide three hours of free confidential consultation with an attorney or accountant for those landowners wishing to understand the financial benefits of donating all or partial interest in land to a land trust. That program is still in operation; contact info@sklt.org for application forms.
