Grab a friend and get out and explore.
That’s the message the Rhode Island Land Trust Council is spreading through its Land Trust Days activities this year.
With more than 60 guided walks, events, and visits to scenic farms and green spaces, put on by Rhode Island’s 47 land trusts, there are ample opportunities to enjoy nature.
Rupert Friday, executive director of the Rhode Island Land Trust Council, said this year’s list of events is even better than last year’s.
“This year there are different activities and land trusts are doing different things,” he said. “When I look through them what catches my eye are the full moon evening walks.”
With the full moon next week, there will be a host of “moon walks” throughout the state.
On Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7:30 p.m., a moon walk will take place at Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary in Charlestown. The following day, there will be a twilight walk at Watson Farm in Jamestown. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, there will be full moon walks at Mount Hope Farm in Bristol and on the Sakonnet Greenway Trail in Middletown at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
He said there are more scavenger hunts this year than last year, and they are very popular events for families with children.
One upcoming treasure hunt, Friday said, is the Jonnycake Treasure Hunt in South Kingstown and Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. Participants will search for hidden treasures at the Crawley Preserve off Glen Rock Road in South Kingstown. If searchers find five or more treasures they will receive a gift certificate for the Kenyon Grist Mill, just down the road. The event is free but registration is required.
Another thing that’s new this year, is participants who attend four Land Trust Days events will have their names entered into a drawing to win a prize. There is also a prize for the person who attends the most events.
Friday said the prize package is nice and is made up of goods thanks to donations from REI, Granny Squibb’s iced tea, Whole Foods and Singer/Songwriter Bill Hurley.
Friday encourages residents and visitors to “get unplugged for a few hours” and take a friend and go to an event.
